FUE vs FUT hair transplant

The two established methods of harvesting donor hair. FUE is more popular; FUT is not obsolete, and for some patients it remains the better option.

FUE compared with FUT
Factor FUE FUT
How donor hair is taken Follicular units punched out individually A strip of scalp removed, then dissected into units
Scarring Scattered dot scars, hidden at short lengths A single linear scar, hidden by hair of moderate length
Grafts in one session Moderate to high Highest — the strip yields more per sitting
Donor area shaving Usually required Only the strip area
Recovery Faster; most return to desk work in 3–5 days Slower; sutures and more donor tenderness
Long-term donor supply Can over-thin donor if harvested aggressively Preserves surrounding density better per graft
Typical cost Higher per graft — more labour intensive Lower per graft

Which one you should have

FUE suits most patients, particularly anyone who wears their hair short, wants a faster recovery, or needs a moderate graft count.

FUT is still the stronger choice for advanced loss needing a very high graft count in one sitting, and for patients who keep their hair long enough to cover a linear scar. It often yields more grafts per unit of donor area consumed.

The honest answer is that the technique should follow the scalp, not the marketing. A clinic that offers only one method will recommend that one.

Common questions

Is FUE better than FUT?

Not universally. FUE avoids a linear scar and recovers faster; FUT yields more grafts per session and can preserve donor density better. The right choice depends on your graft requirement, hair length and donor characteristics.

Does FUE leave no scar at all?

FUE leaves many small dot scars rather than one line. They are inconspicuous at normal hair lengths but can become visible if the head is shaved very close or if the donor area was over-harvested.

Can the two be combined?

Yes. For very high graft requirements, some plans combine both to reach the count without over-harvesting either region.
